Support to Irish Government Departments - Marine Mammal Ecology

Since 2009 SIAR Environment has been engaged in providing scientific expertise and support to the Department of Environment, Heritage & Local Government and the Department of Arts, Heritage & the Gaeltacht, on the ecology and conservation requirements of marine mammals in Ireland, and on related issues.

Scientific support includes the provision of advice in relation to the effect of sectoral impacts on populations of Irish marine species, in addition to advice concerning Irish legislation, European Directives, international agreements and Conventions.

The work also includes the provision of expertise concerning existing and future research & monitoring programmes, the implementation of the Conservation Plan for Cetaceans in Irish Waters, assisting in the co-ordination and management of projects and external contracts, and carrying out data analysis and reporting functions. It also involves representing the interests of the Department at meetings, workshops, conferences, etc, and working with other Government Departments and agencies as required to facilitate species protection and management.
