Marine Mammal Observer (MMO)
As part of the management of environmental risk to marine species from a range of human activities the use of one or more Marine Mammal Observers (MMOs) may be required to monitor for potential impacts before, during and/or after the activity takes place, and to implement risk management or mitigation procedures.
Members of SIAR Environment have been actively involved in survey design, baseline site investigation and MMO monitoring across a range of marine and coastal projects including coastal construction and development works, dredging, excavation, drilling and blasting, as well as offshore seabed mapping and seismic surveys. Techniques and practices employed include point, line-transect and strip-transect sampling for marine mammals and seabirds, land-based and boat-based observation, passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) and implementation of the Code of Practice for the Protection of Marine Mammals during Acoustic Seafloor Surveys in Irish Waters.
