Population Ecology of Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises

Ireland is home to a diverse and breathtaking array of marine species, including more than 20 species of whales, dolphins and porpoises (known collectively as Cetaceans).

SIAR’s Dr Oliver Ó Cadhla has been involved in research into Ireland’s cetaceans since the early 1990’s. Over the last 20 years his involvement in this challenging work has been extensive and wide-ranging from initial studies of cetacean occurrence and coastal strandings by University College Cork’s Department of Zoology and the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group to research into the population and behavioural ecology of cetacean species in coastal and offshore environments, both in Ireland and overseas.
